2050 Mash Recirc

Postby DesertSkyBrewery on Tue Nov 03, 2009 11:26 am

Recently sold my Brutus and am moving on to bigger things. I have a question for the 2050 owners.

When recirculating the mash, does the return for the wort flow back through the sparge ring? And does the false bottom do a good enough job to keep that smaller particulates from leaving the MT and potentially clogging the sparge arm? My crush is borderline scary, and until the bed is properly set I always have some grain making it through.

How small are the holes for the sparge ring anyway?

And finally how long is the wait for a 2050 currently, anyone have an idea?

Thanks in advance

I think the average wait is 5-5 month on the sculptures. Should have held on to your Brutus untill the new rig showed up

you should call B3 and see what the wait time is

I did and its right at 12 weeks. THat isn't too bad I suppose

And to answer my first question, I think this speaks for itself.

viewtopic.php?f=1&t=31738&p=325348&hilit=

I think I'll just build a return manifold for recirculating, and keep the sparge ring for sparging. QDs should make the swap quick and painless

Hi, all who are waiting delivery,
In my humble opinion...The 2050, for that matter any system that B3 puts out, is a great system! Have run 65-70 batches through mine since delivery a year ago. I generally push it to the max. if one is really careful, you can get 25 gal. yield into the fementers. Have been brewing back to back brews. it's a bunch of work! But only have to clean up once! but until I finalize some wholesale accounts, I can't put out the $$ to move up to a 7 BBL. system...Major bucks!
I really am envious (though I have never seen (up-close and personal) the Sabco system. I like the concept of having some kind of computer memorized ability to replicate batches With the 2050, one needs to keep careful log records to achieve brew consistancy. Oh well...being somewhat anal retentive, I enjoy writing things down. (Just an aside, the tippy dump thing is a God send!)
To all who are waiting for delivery...just a couple of words...It is WELL worth the wait, it is all that it was advertised to be, (Caveat) the manual that comes with it ...sucks...if you are new to brewing the book won't help , if you want to get advice on modifications or possible up-grades...GOOD f...ing luck...you will need to talk to someone much higher up than I have ever been able to access by phone. The responce I usually get is...Yeah...I guess you COULD do that?? But I must say...I have never had the paticence to wait to get one of the (obviously) knowledible people that are there to get on the line...phone calls from MEX. to US are like, $4.00 a minute!. Another word of advice...if you can possibily swing it...go for the stainless frame option...I did not, and will regret it forever...well that's a lie...if I had waited till I had the $$ for the stainless option, I'd likely still be trying to scrape the $ out of the wife's grocery budjet to buy anything! And any 2050..or any other B3 system is worlds ahead than none!
Best regards!

DesertSky,
Had an issue with re-circ and sparging with the 2050..holes in sparge ring would plug with grain/husks sucked from below the false bottom. Asked B3 about same...not productive... I jury-rigged a SS bracket that lowered the float switch down so I can keep the sparge ring just above the grain bed (have to stir mash gently on occaison to avoid chaneling). Have to watch the volume of sparge water but do not have a prob. with back-wash, nor plugging of the sparge ring holes...that was a nightmare to clean! Also, don't have an issue with the heat exchanger in the HLT filling up with grain. As far as the false bottom, I have never had a stuck sparge...the holes seem to filter very well. when brewing Hefe, I use some rice hulls, otherwise, good to go.

I figured as much. I have a return manifold out of copper Im going to use to bypass that problem. Ill put it on a QD like the sparge arm for an easy change. Im sure like any other rig you just need to use it a few times to get the routine down.

This is going ot be the longest 12 weeks ever. Maybe its a godo thing that Im doing this doing the holidays so I have something to keep my mind occupied.
