1550 VS 2050

Postby msamsonz28 » Wed May 16, 2012 4:01 pm

I'm trying to decide which sculpture would best suit my needs. I currently brew 10 gallon batches, and will likely continue to do so. I also still do 5 gallons for some higher gravity beers. However, I would like the option of an occasional larger batch to split with friends, so I was looking at the 2050.
What is the smallest batch size you can do on the 2050? I was thinking a 5 gallon batch might be too small in the mash tun. And even 10 might be inefficient for the HLT. How much water do you need in the HLT to cycle the mash? Say for example if you only need 7 gallons of sparge water, is that enough? Or do you just have to heat additional water to cover the heat exchanger?

Caveat this answer by saying that I own neither unit. I have been on this board for a while though and brewing for a bit longer than that.

Most systems are sized to optimally run at volumes in a certain range. Trying to brew 5 gallons on a system designed to be able to do 20 will more than likely render any automation in the system useless (temp probes at specific heights). At the same time if you typically do a lot of bigger beers (1.08+) the mash tun size on the 1550 may not be large enough to do that with a 10 gallon batch.

If you typically do 5-10 gallon batches and the only reason you're looking at the 2050 is for the though that at some point you might do a 20 gallon batch to split with friends, go with the 1550 and just have a day where you do a double batch.

Thanks, that is pretty much the conclusion I came up with. I emailed the support team and they said the same thing.
