A good plan. After using it in manual mode you can make a better educated decision if the $2K is worth it to you or not. It is for some - not for others.

Is $2,000 really what the upgrade costs in parts, or can you upgrade it cheaper yourself?

Well color me jealous. I've always wanted a sculpture. But I do pretty well with coolers and a boil kettle.
I do have a temperature controlled conical. That combined with kegging made things a lot easier.
Post pictures and let us know how it goes when you get it going.

Now I just need a clapper to start my mill to be automated. hahahaha

I want pictures too.
I've always lusted after one but like others had said talked myself out of buying one.
But IF I hit the lotto I'm buying two or three of them!

Just wanted to post some pics of the system after it has been set up:

And finally, the mash tun:

Everything looks to be in order, and the first brew on it will be this Saturday. Making a SMaSH brew to get the hang of the system. Originally I was going to make some hop monster IPA but after thinking about it, I figure its best to see what my efficiency will be with this and get used to it's operation before I drop like $100 on ingredients for a potential disaster. After I've brewed on it once though, that's another story!

How does that mash tun keep the temp steady during the mash? Is their a coil in the mash tun or hlt?

You could still go with your IPA plan and just adjust your hop quantities if needed up/down based on your pre-boil gravity. You may end up with a pale ale or a double IPA if you're way off but if you start with an estimated efficiency of 75% you'll likley only be +/- a couple of points of your intended OG.

It's a HERMS system but since it is not automated he will have to keep a very close eye on it the whole time.

I considered this, and it is essentially what I will do with the SMaSH, since I have a pound of the hops.

Yeah, it has a heat exchanger in the HLT and the thermal mass of the grain will slow any temp fluctuations a little. (Very little.) I'll just turn the pump on when needed.
