can you buy grapes from a vineyard

Postby Cazador » Thu Jun 08, 2006 12:56 pm

or has anybody tried?

I'd like to get into homebrew wine, but the box of juice and add in yeast is sort of elementry to me. I don't currently have the room/time to grow grapes, so I was wondering if anybody has ever approached a grower about buying grapes?

Most growers won't mind if you take their second crop off their hands for a small fee, some might let you do it for free. When it looks like a heavy year (like 2005 was) you can probably get pretty good grapes for next to nothing. It can be tough to only get 100 or so pounds, if growers are trying to unload several tons. Check the wine country classifieds (winerysite.com). Cheers.

You can also contact the Independent Grape Growers of Paso Robles (IGGPRA) website (http://www.pasorobleswinegrapes.com/buy ... rapes.html). That's only three hours up and I know lots of SoCal'ers who drive up to pick up grapes. Lots of good grapes in that area. Good luck!

My family is starting a winery in San Diego county. My father in law has been buying grapes from a local grower for a few years, as he made wine as a hobby.

The minimum was 1 ton of grapes; it basically filled up his truck bed.

They usually sell you un-processed grapes which means you'll need a way to crush and de-stem them and then a way to press them after fermentation is done. These are pieces of specialized equipment.

Other than that, you should be able to get grapes in almost any wine region.
