wine bottles that take a crown cap

Postby mrsoul12 » Tue Dec 26, 2006 5:26 am

I am looking to bottle up some triple and cider in large wine bottles. 750 ml or so. Where can I find some bottles that accept a crown cap. I do not have a corker and do not want to buy one if I can avoid it.

I don't know of any, I would just use cheap champagne bottles.

Willmost chamagne bottles take a cap? How strong are they? Triples can have some pretty high carbonation levels.

Wine bottles definitely won't handle the carbonation of a Tripel so those should be out any way. For a basic carbonation and even a tripel you would probably be safe with any champagne bottle. The thicker versions would obviously be better but harder to find.

As for capping, a bench capper is the only way to effectively cap them AFAIK.

I am not a 100% on any of this because I have not tried it myself, yet. Plan to cap and bottle some RIS in champagne bottles but the carb levels will be lower than the Tripel.

Bottle conditioning champagne in the wrong bottles is where a probably may arise but I don't think a Tripel carb level is near that of a Champagne.

If you dont mind buying and drinking a lot of beer, the Schlafly Reserve bottles are 750 ml with a crown cap. You might also think about swing top bottles

Some of the 750 ml size Belgian bottles are cappable. Several come corked & capped from the brewery. Some use the standard cap, but some also use a slightly larger one. If you have a good beer bar in your area that is also friendly to homebrewers they may set some aside for you. I'm lucky enough to have one around here.

Most American-made sparkling wine bottles fit standard sized bottle caps as does Martinelli's sparkling apple juice. From various parties over the last year I've collected nearly two cases worth of empty Korbel and Martinelli bottles.

As for where to buy the bottles empty? Not a clue.

not unless you are soaking the stopper in the wine, which you shouldn't be. You should be fine. Wash it real good and it should diminish too.
