Need mead help

Postby mjrice » Fri Jun 08, 2012 7:55 am

Is there a beer-brewer's guide to making mead? Something that starts with the assumption the reader already knows how to brew and just wants to make mead?

(A sticky in this forum would be great)

I have not made any mead in a while; but when I started, I got most of my info from:

Mead can be much easier to make than beer
one gallon bottled water
one quart honey ( about 3lbs 2 oz.)
6 oz of thawed frozen concentrate orange juice (1/2 12 0z can)
snack box raisins (one oz.) squashed
½ teaspoon of Lalvin K1V-1116 dry yeast (dry to medium)
.... or Red Star® Côte des Blancs (medium) or 1/4 tube white labs sweet mead yeast (sweet)
cheap vodka for airlock
size 6 1/2 rubber stopper

use ur beer knowledge
like pouring enough water out of the bottle so the other ingredients will fit
you can make the honey easier to pour by letting it stand in a sink or bowl of warm water
shake honey, water, OJ raisins thoroughly
make a starter or not - ur preference
pitch starter or yeast, airlock

Rack after one month into a 1 gallon glass jug
rack after another month
after yet another month - bottle, U can use 12 ox beer bottles with caps
drink in 6 month or age as long as u like before drinking

The Compleat Meadmaker is a good book
u can skip the equipment and sanitation parts
