Speidel Plastic Fermenting Tanks

Postby turbo_ale » Thu Aug 09, 2012 6:11 pm

I noticed on the new redesigned More Beer website that they are now selling Speidel Plastic Fermenting tanks. I think this is what Greg at MullerBrau uses ?

What has been your experience using these, pros / cons.

I see them being much easier than the carboy, not having to siphon, easier to clean, easier to move.

Speidel Plastic Fermenting Tanks

Postby Brewtime » Fri Aug 10, 2012 4:41 am

I was interested in getting a few of these and maybe selling off my Fermenator. However like most things that the host sells it is on backorder and has been for some time.

The ones Greg at Muller Brau and I use are slightly different. They are Curtec. I have two of them and have used them about 5 times, I love them. I did mess up the lid on the first one I drilled but fixed it with silicone other than that they are easy to clean, dry hopping is easy and not too bad carrying with wort. http://www.generalcontainer.com/product.aspx?pid=20
On tap: Bastards of Anarchy, Stone Pale, Hobgoblin, Harvest Pumpkin, Mild
Kegged and Conditioning: NOTHING
Bourbon Barrel conditioning: NOTHING but planning an Old Ale
Fermenting: Old Ale
On Deck: Sister Star of the Sun - English version and American version

I used to use one, may have been a different brand. I only used it for secondary fermentation and serving - there was a C02 dispenser that could be added to the top so you could pressurise it with the little C02 capsules. Worked a treat. Easy to use, pretty robust, translucent enough to see how much beer is in there.

Maybe is demand is high enough the company will increase production or another company will see the market and make some.

Just ordered two 15 gallon speidels. Sounds like they have a couple left if any one is still interested. The web sites still shows a back order. Just give them a call !

If someone who bought these can confirm if the spigot leaks when filled that would be great. Like the idea of one large fermentation vessel, though the spigot that I used to use on my old brewing bucket would always drip slowly when fermenting. Drove me nuts so I went back to carboys.

Holy crap ! the 15 gallon tank is big
I had to butcher the door shelves to make it fit. Its still too tall, but I think it will work with some more adjusting

Those look pretty decent. I was thinking about the 120L but that might be a bit too heavy. I wish I would have bought more Curtecs when I first got mine. I picked up 4 for $8 each but that was a long time ago when Doug was throwing them out. He didn't know there was a market for them.
