Hangar 24 Homebrew Competition

Postby MaltnHopsrGood » Sat May 12, 2012 9:39 pm

I entered 5 beers into the comp, hoping to at least place...I won a gold for the Light Hybrid Category with my Cream Ale! So stoked!!! This is my first medal in competition. It was very cool to also see Turbo_ale win a medal too! I'll let him tell his story though...

What an awesome day!

Ya baby, woo hoo, total stoke, silver in 21A, spice, herb, vegetable. This only took me 33 batches and three versions of this to get this medal.

So much fun, I too entered five beers, but I did not think this beer was going to place, I thought my blonde ale was going somewhere, nope.

Sean and I entered last year at Hangar 24 comp, and we both thought one of us would do something, not. This year we both got something, Sean, Gold in Lt. hybrid , me silver in 21A.

Sean and I have been exchanging your beers with each other, and been using the 20 point scale. I loved his Vanilla Coffee Stout (19 points) and Summit Pale (19) points I scored. Now that I look back over my notes I gave your Cream Ale a 13, what do I know ?

Here is my recipe for Fresca Cerveza aka Salsa Verde: 20 lbs Rahr 2-row, 2 lbs of 15L, 1 lb of carapils, 2 oz Sterling @ 60, 2 oz Sterling @ 10, Cilantro, Garlic, Serrano Peppers, Lime, green onions, tomatillo, single infusion @ 154F.

Thank you to Hangar 24 for this competition !

I should expound on the details, S-33 dry yeast, 1.060 OG, 1.016 FG, 20 days primary ferment @ 65F, 5.76% abv, forced carbed, added the ingredients in the 3rd day of ferment, 73.33% apparent attenuation. Also I split this batch, 5 gallons using S-33 and 5 gallons using T-58, my favorite was the T-58, more of a peppery zing. I had no 12 oz bottles with the T-58, so I entered the S-33 version.

Sean, this Cream ale of yours I judged, the brew date was 11 months ago, you must have made a new batch of Cream Ale for this 3rd annual comp ?

Has anyone heard anything about this year's comp yet? There's nothing on their website, and I've emailed them twice and never received any response.
