Pale ale off flavors - motueka or new CFC or something else?

Post by Cabin Joe » Sat Jul 12, 2014 7:47 am

Hi all - long time, no brew!

Brewed JZ's pale ale a few weeks ago with motueka hops and a new CFC. For the amount of hops in it, the finished beer has surprisingly little bitterness, aroma, and a slight metallic flavor in the finish. Water was charcoal filtered as normal. Any ideas on what this could be?

I did use a new CFC in line with an IC for the first time. I rinsed the CFC with hot water (blue-green water came out initially, but rinsed with an additional 2-3 gallons) and did a quick rinse with vinegar, then flushed with water. The motueka hops smelled fine out of the bag, though I've never used them before.

Any advice on troubleshooting would be helpful. I've brewed probably 15-20 10 gallon batches before this and never had this kind of result.

Dry hopped one keg with an ounce of cascade. Helped some with aroma, but still not great.

18.35 lb. 2 row
1.5 lb. munich
1.5lb. victory
1.0 lb. wheat malt

1 oz. magnum 60 min.
0.5 oz. amarillo 20 min.
0.5 oz. centennial 20 min.
1 oz. motueka 20 min.
0.5 oz. amarillo 10 min.
0.5 oz. centennial 10 min.
1 oz. cascade flame out
1 oz. motueka flame out

Efficiency ~65% (will improve crush and braided hose set up next time, usually around 75%)
