So just getting into smoking. Was wonder what everyone is using for rubs. Been reading alot, here and at , seems like people are liking Big Ron's Rubs both the original and the taste of houston. I have also seen mention of Butt rub. any favorites?

This was the basis of my dry rub from here:

Ingredients List
1 cup sugar
1 cup non-iodized table salt
1/2 cup brown sugar*
5 Tablespoons + 1 teaspoon chili powder
2 Tablespoons + 2 teaspoons ground cumin
4 teaspoons Accent (MSG)
4 teaspoons cayenne pepper
4 teaspoons black pepper, freshly ground
4 teaspoons garlic powder
4 teaspoons onion powder
* Dried out lightly by exposing on cookie sheet room temp, several hours, or in slightly warmed oven.

Since then it has changed a bit with less salt, more sugar and NO MSG. I have also added ground coffee beans and coriander with great results. I think it is like brewing beer. Start with a base recipe and tweak it to you liking.

I like Cabela's Open Season rubs - they have a large selection for all types of uses at a good price. I have tried many and like each that I've used. ... m23&Go.x=0

My rub has:

curry powder
brown sugar
onion powder
garlic powder
black pepper
chili powder

I'm looking into a way to put chocolate in there as well but no success yet.

A lot of people seem to like sugar in their rubs, but I personally prefer to not have sugar with it.
