Had dinner with my daughter's future in-laws last night. His mother had a fantastic marinade on some grilled short ribs; but she said she often uses on chicken as well. I liked it enough that I wanted to post here as well -

For 5 lbs of meat -
1 cup soy sauce
1 cup sugar
1/2 to 3/4 cup wine, beer, or coke - she said all work well and uses whatever she has readily on hand at the time
1/4 cup sesame oil
3 tbsp minced garlic
2 tsp black pepper

Will also add- if fresh/in season - chopped green onion

That is nearly identical to mine. I use brown sugar instead of cane sugar and 1 liter of the cheapest rootbeer I can find (it is more about the carbonic acid than the flavor). I sometimes will simmer the ribs in 2 liters of the rootbeer before I marinate them. I slow cook them at 160-180*F for up to 12 hours and serve them with homemade Sweet & Sour sauce.

Dr. Pepper is also fun to throw into this kind of marinade, too! 8)
