I had a good beer and a meal from the Sapnish Peaks brewery in Bozeman.

I think they are gone, or at least moved. I haven't been there since they had free wings on Tuesday nights, in 1998.

All in all, MT sucks bigtime for brew. It is bud capital of the free world.

There are a handful of breweries, but outside of that, good luck.

Bozeman is your best bet as the college crowd coupled with people from out of state support better drinking standards.

I can't compare, as I've only been to Missoula. It's where I discovered Moose Drool, so I will always have a special place in my heart for Missoula.

Not sure about the area you're in but if you do get down south Montana Ale Works in Bozeman has a nice selection of beers and great food.

Road Kill Cafe ("From Your Grille to Ours") in McCleod is a great place - certainly off the beaten path but worth it. Enough good beers to go with a great game menu.

The Den (or something like that) on the Madison a few miles below quake lake is as good as it gets in that area. Another place up the road at Hegben Lake (on the lake side of the road - about mid lakeshore) had a decent selection of beers - never had the food here though.

Murray Bar over in Livingston always has a few micros and is a place unto itself.

Just a few that come to mind...
Cheers!

I know this post is old, but I cannot help but set the record straight! If you want to know about some micros in MT, then here goes. If you want a great place to eat, try the Lewis and clark brewery in Helena. They also have a tasting room in the basement. Most of Montanas breweries are just tasting rooms, and not eateries. Kids always welcome by the way. And who ever said that montana doesnt know about beer had no idea what they were talking about! I can think of at least fifteen breweries within a couple hours of my home, and more scattered here and there. I am in no way associated with any of these breweries, but visiting them is one of my favorite hobbies. So if you are going to visit MT this summer, look a few up! Some have websites, so do a search.
