Sinus congestion and alcohol

Postby BrewBum » Fri Dec 04, 2009 7:51 am

So I have been suffering from massive headaches and sinus congestion for around 3 months now and it gets extremely applified when I have a beer, just one beer. That hasn't stopped me of course but I started looking into it this morning because it is really bad today after our brew meeting last night. oddly enough I thought I had this beat and thought it was stress related because I hadn't had them for a couple weeks.

So I do some research, apparnently alcohol is REALLY bad for sinus infections and can actually trigger them.

So I am going to go on some nasal rinses, zyrtec and sudafed and see if I can beat this down so I can resume alcohol consumption. These headaches blow and pretty much make it impossible to sleep at night. The headaches are on par or worse than your worse hangover headache, just play awful.

If any one else has had this problem or has some solutions let me know. I can't obviously give up alcohol for the rest of my life, that is crazy talk. Also, apparently cheese and chocolate will have the same effect. I don't notice those as much thought.

Nate, I have the same problem that seems to hit me every winter for a few weeks. I have always gone on antibiotics because they turn into sinus infections...but I just can't give up beer so I have learned to live with it.

Nate- I have dealt with sinus issues for years, I have had 4 Sinus surgeries in my life to re-do my sinuses so they would be "normal" and drain properly. Knock on wood I have been fine for a couple years now, but when I feel that pressure coming on I do what my ENT has suggested: Mucinex D and a Sinus rinse twice a day.

Have you tried rinsing your sinuses out with the hoppiest beer you can find?

You should go fishing; it is good for the soul. Have you ever heard of a single Nazi who liked to fish? You can't trust people who don't fish. We need to teach our House & Senate members to fish. Those who don't want to should be used for bait.

+1 on the mucinex and the sinus rinse. Neti pots work great but are disgusting to use.

Also push the non-alcoholic fluids a lot during this time - it helps keep the mucus thin to allow drainage.

In a sick and demented way I thought about it just for fun.

I will go grab some mucinex D and start the rinses. Thanks Brandon!

I use a neti pot and love it. I am really starting to think the goal of EVERYONE is to get us all on as many drugs as they can. Tin foil hat at the ready. Plus I am self insured which makes all my durgs very, very expensive.

I have sleep apnea and other "nose" problems. The neti pot has been a god send and it just warm salt water. They have been in use for 100s of years those people have to know a thing or two. I was skeptical at first but now I am a believer. The old ear/nose/throat has never felt better. Wish I had done it years ago.

Besides we all know Nate is a DBag now he can douche his nose :P

Well played!

I don't have a neti pot but what is basically a mustard bottle that you squeeze up your nose. Works well. I actually talked to someone that just uses an old mustard bottle.

This is the one that I use, I have never used the Netti pot, but I like this one because it has some positive pressure when it pushes. This is the one my ENT gave me and what he said to use:

Interesting. I never had any sinus issues until the last few years. Now I get headaches occaisionally, and I have slowly realized that they are caused by my sinuses. I've seriously considered getting the neti pot, but I like Brandon's suggestion.

As with brewing make sure you use either cooled down boiled water or distilled water. Dont want to add any bacteria to the sinus area. The little packs of salt solution dissolve easy. Hmm I wonder what the ph of it is...gonna have to break out the ph meter when I get home.
