comment and a questions about my keg

Postby hahahaweee on Tue Nov 03, 2009 9:34 am

i just switched to kegging not too long ago and rather love it. i wasnt expecting the jump in clarity or wonderful satisfaction that comes with literally having beer on tap... however, i find i get way too much head when i pour no matter how hard i try. is this a pressure issue or perhaps a line size issue? i have the basic kegging system if that helps. also i've been thinking about doing some natural carbing to get things going and save some co2 any idea on how much if any that'll save me?

Need more information.

How are you tapping the keg (i.e. kegerator, cobra tap, faucet through the side of a fridge, etc)?
How long is the line between the keg and the tap?
How are you carbing the beer?
What temp are you keeping the beer at?

i just have the basic system http://morebeer.com/view_product/18190/ ... aft_System so whatever the specs are on that... the line isnt very long, the tap has fallen apart a couple times (its a pain to get those lil ball bearings back in there the first time) and its the cheap plastic faucet. i was leaving pressure at 15-20lbs hooked up for a day to get the co2 dissolved and now ive back down to about 9lbs for serving. temp is at 70 degrees i think... and lower is not an option.

ummmm ok....I personally don't like drinking my beer at 70 degrees, so everything below is theoretical.

In order to carb your beer at 70 degrees to 2 volumes of c02, you would need to set your pressure to 20.78 PSI.

If you are using 3/16 serving line, you would need 9 feet 10 inches of serving line.

That would give you a balanced system keeping your beer carbed to 2 volumes and get you to around 1 psi at the tap so that you would not have a wild pour.

If you lower the temps, you can lower the PSI and the amount of beer line necessary to get a good pour.

For chuckles and grins, I checked what you would need with 1/4" line, looks like 35 feet 4" for a good pour.

I would suggest finding a way to lower the temperature.

+1 - the system you bought is intended to have the beer cold (the length of line from the tap to the faucet is probably 5-6' which balances out with a beer kept at ~35-40 degrees on 8-12 PSI of CO2.

Maybe you can get a 3 gallon keg and stick it in the main fridge? Otherwise, it's a 35' of line or learning to love foam.

apparently our lil kegs will fit in a bucket... it doesnt exactly have fine tuned temp control but itll work :D can't believe i didnt think of that sooner (especially considering that's essentially what you do with full size kegs). still, i wish i had a beer fridge
