Heads up... forum software changing

Postby gfoster » Tue Feb 26, 2008 4:28 pm

This is a heads up to everyone to let them know that we (hopefully) will be upgrading to version 3 of the software used to run this forum... I don't know exactly when it will happen, but it could happen as early as tonight or tomorrow, or it could take a while to get it done (we're not in control, we just put in the request).

What does this mean for you?

Well, the first thing you'll notice is things will look pretty different. The latest release of the software is quite a bit updated visually and so you can expect the place to look different right off the bat. The posts and forum layout will be preserved, all the post history will still be here and your actual account info should transfer over just fine. Just expect things to look pretty different.

There's a ton of new functionality in the new version that we will be exploring as well. This new functionality will more than likely (initially) be turned off, so the migration will be smooth. However, we'll be exploring it and switching things on as we get comfortable with them. The biggest thing that will make *me* happy is the extra moderator functionality as well as better logging... and MUCH improved security features which will enable us to go back to automated account signups instead of the manual approval process we go through right now. There's a lot of anti-spam features and security stuff in there to help keep the porn spammers at bay while still allowing fast turnaround on new account requests.

Anyway, we'll talk more about some of the new features and such once it happens, I just wanted to give everyone a heads up. The apperance change alone is enough to make people go "huh? Am I in the wrong place?" the first time they load the new board up, so be prepared. I think it's much nicer and cleaner, myself.

Scott

You should go fishing; it is good for the soul. Have you ever heard of a single Nazi who liked to fish? You can't trust people who don't fish. We need to teach our House & Senate members to fish. Those who don't want to should be used for bait.
