Search Throttling

Postby emptypint » Fri Nov 27, 2009 10:32 pm

Doing a searches on the forums often take a couple tries due to search term refining. I understand for Denial of Services purposes the search throttling is necessary, but can we loosen it up a little for people how are logged in. Maybe loosen the throttle for people who have more posts.
Cheers,
E.P.

Doesn't work that way. It's a global setting across the board, not based upon post count.

I figured. Maybe the dev group that's maintains this forum code can add it as an enhancement.
Cheers,

Ha, good one! Pretty sure More Beer does not have a PM, PL, architect and 8 developers working on this forum so Nate, Scott, Craig and Major can keep "busy" during the day :P

To be blunt, the mods here have zero access to make those changes and the people who do (none of which are posters here) have something like that so far down their list it will never been seen.

"Search Throttling"

If you try to do searches one right after the other in the search field above, the forum won't allow the second search. This is because, searches are pretty CPU intensive. If a hacker wanted to cause a Denial of Service (DoS) attack on this bulletin board, they'd just launch a bunch of searches at once. It would bring the server to it's knees, and probably crash the server. For protection, the server limits the number of searches by allowing only "so many" in a given period of time.

I posted this request, because I'm a homebrew noob, and I don't know all of the brew terms. So, I usually have to refine my search terms to get better results.

To the More Beer folks, I know this is silly nit picky kind of thing. Just a suggestion. I appreciate the forums as a service, and the B3 HB community. Cheers to you guys.
Cheers,
E.P.
