wine smells bad !

Postby ol'timer » Thu Mar 15, 2012 7:19 pm

:( I have two out of 10 wines made that smell bad but taste nice an sweet, what could cause this?I made wine in early Sept. Racked 3 times, all clear,no sediment after 3rd racking, stabilized it ,let sit for 10 days,no refermentation, sweeten the wine to taste, opened it today, wife said it smells, could this be gas?to much acid? two types of wine have been like this, never had it with the others.could it be just young wine?any help ,Thanks.

Weird... maybe try aerating it? Sometimes using an aerator can reduce the smell a bit.

If not maybe it is because it's young wine as you say.

First off, what wine yeast did you use, your starting gravity, and the temp you fermented the wine at. Some yeast strains when stressed by lack of nutrients, or hot fermentations will give off H2S, hydrogen sulfide. If it smells like rotten eggs, then that is the culprit.

i used a rc 212 yeast for the red wine, and a 1118 for white wine.I think it is coming from the wine condictioner,or the corks.

Id be willing to bet money its neither the corks or conditioner. NJ
